GenderLab Talk Series #3: Summary Brief on Gender Equality and Women’s Rights in the (Federal) Constitution

How can a federal constitution guarantee gender equality?

To realize equality, a constitutional approach is necessary. The talk of Karen National Union’s advisor, May-Oo Mutraw, and the subsequent discussion covered a number of strategic approaches to address gender equality in the constitution at the state and the union levels. Protection of women’s rights, women’s political participation and representation, and customary law issues are the three primary areas of the Constitution that require careful attention. Gender intersecting with ethnicity is a key to advance gender equality in Myanmar, which should be guaranteed in the constitution. A historical review on rights in Myanmar was also discussed.

Please read the suggested solutions in the light of the current situation.
