In order to advance gender equality in Myanmar, federalism and a strong constitution that safeguards the fundamental human rights of its people are needed. Dr. Marcus Brand, Head of Programme of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) in Myanmar provided an overview of Myanmar’s current political landscape and transitional constitutional process. The discussion highlighted the benefits of a decentralized federal government and the need to establish accountability mechanisms, a women’s commission and a functional judiciary. It was mentioned that having a constitutional guarantee to achieve gender equality throughout the country is essential. However, should matters on gender equality be addressed now?
