Master program:

This full scholarship program will be a 12-month in-person master program at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand. This long-term capacity development program aims activists who are at risk and would need more time away from the country. During this study, they will have an opportunity to upgrade their knowledge internationally as well as network with other students and scholars.

Furthermore, students will also be linked to the “Scholars At Risk” Network to find best support for the next steps and become involved in the network through the “Canada-Myanmar Scholarship”. Students will also have an opportunity to share ethical research briefs in the GenderLab website.

Certificate program:

This full scholarship program is a four-month in-person certificate course at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand, intends for activists and politicians whose activities are being restricted. This course will assist them to reflecting on their experiences, planning for the future, and provide an opportunity to upgrade their knowledge during such a difficult time.

Students will also have a chance to share their learning reflections and experiences as a paper by the end of the program.

Canada-Myanmar IDRC Fellowship is funded under the Knowledge for Democracy-Myanmar Initiative by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in partnership with Global Affairs Canada

Application Deadline for January 2024 Intake: November 1, 2023

For both certificate program and one-year master’s program scholarship, applicants need to apply for the Gender and Development Studies (GDS) under the Department of Development and Sustainability, School of Environment, Resources and Development to be eligible for this scholarship. Please select your academic program carefully when applying for the admission AIT system.

2. Application Requirements

  • must be Myanmar nationals
  • who have successfully completed a three-year university minimum
  • have a strong experience of working on gender equality, human rights and justice, peace and security and democracy areas clearly show motivation and strong commitment. Please include your statement of purpose in the application highlighting your motivation to join the program.
  • commit write an editorial/ opinion piece upon completion (for certificate program)/ research brief (for one-year master’s program)
  • have a thorough command of written English (IELTS or AIT-EET 6.0 or above). See http://bit.ly/ait-eng-req

  • Applicants must provide two recommendation letters from current employment’s supervisor, and a past academic advisor of prior education’s degree as part of your application.

3. Duration and Commencement

  • The certificate program is for 4 months (January to April / August to November)
  • One year master’s is for 12 months (two semesters and one inter semester).

(1) Where are you going to study?

It will be at the Asia Institute of Technology (AIT) located in Thailand. AIT is a
regional institute of higher studies, and has students from all over Asia and

(2) Is it online or offline study?

It is offline – on campus study.

(3) Is there any age limitation for this scholarship?

There is no age limit as long as you have a bachelor degree.

(4) Can I apply even if I don’t have a bachelor degree?
  • No, you cannot apply if you don’t have at least a 3-years bachelor degree.
  • However, for a certificate degrees, in exceptional cases, candidates who lack formal academic qualifications but who have extensive and appropriate professional experience may be considered for admission.
(5) Do I need to pay application process fee for both certificate and master’s degree?
  • Yes, you have to pay non-refundable application process fee of THB 800 (USD 25) for both Certificate and Master’s Program. Please contact us at genderlab@ait.asia if you have difficulty in paying.
(6) Do I need IELTS or TOFEL score to apply?
  • Yes. You need to have either IELTS – 6.0 and above or TOFEL paper: 550, TOFEL CBT: 213, TOFEL IBT: 80. These scores are valid for two years.
  • Instead of IELTS or TOFEL, you can also take the AIT’s online English test. AIT’s online English test is cheaper, and you can get the result faster. However, please note that the test dates are limited and fixed. For details, please check – https://languages.ait.ac.th
(7) Can I apply for both certificate and master’s program at the same time?

You can apply both certificate and master’s scholarship at the same time, but you
need to send a separate application for each degree.

(8) Is this study focus only on Gender and Development Studies?

Yes. If you are applying for this scholarship, please apply for Gender and
Development Studies. Applicants with clear interest on gender and development
studies or with professional experience in working on gender equality are given
preference. Please emphasize your interest in your Statement of Purpose (SoP).
