GenderLab Talk Series #4: Summary Brief on Gender Equality and Federalism in Myanmar

How to ensure that a federal system upholds women’s rights?

Society must encourage inclusivity, fairness, and equal participation in decision-making. Nang Phyu Phyu Lin, an independent consultant, and a Gender and Development Advocate, stressed that a federal constitution should mandate all institutions to implement gender policies and offer social protection benefits, such as childcare facilities and support, in order to advance equal opportunities and rights for individuals of all ethnicities. However, even in federal or democratic systems, if the opinions of the majority are the only ones taken into consideration, minorities’ voices get marginalized. Thus, valuing diversity, and respecting the rights, agency, and autonomy of every individual regardless of gender are very important.
