THE SPEAKER
Joanna van Asselt is an Associate Research, fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Myanmar.
Agriculture Policy Support Activity (MAPSA), she oversees the cleaning and analysis of the Myanmar Household Welfare Survey (MHWS) as well as surveys on migration.
She has her PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of Florida and her master’s in economics from Johns Hopkins University. Her research is focused on migration, gender biases in welfare outcomes, and productivity among smallholder farmers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
ABSTRACT
Myanmar is experiencing a wide range of localized shocks due to COVID-19, political instability, weather events, pests, and different kinds of economic disruptions, all at a time when information is scarce and most existing survey efforts have been cancelled or postponed. In light of these knowledge gaps, the Myanmar Agriculture Policy Support Activity (MAPSA) implements a large-scale high frequency phone survey, the Myanmar Household Welfare Survey (MHWS), intended to be representative at the state/region level, and designed to track agricultural production, rural employment, and welfare (incomes, food security, diets, coping strategies, gender equality. This seminar will present the MHWS as well as other surveys MAPSA is implementing, including a farm survey, a food vendor survey, a trade survey, and a migration survey. We will discuss how to understand, use, and access MAPSA data.
